[ speaking in chinese ] this is a picture of chinatown, in where a few hours celebrations will be in full swing. this is the year of the snake and those born during the year are said to be thoughtful and complex. i wonder if you know anybody like that. i'm melanie alnwick. thank you for joining me this morning. it's a chilly start to the day. for more on what we can expect, let's head over to gwen talbart. good morning. >> good morning, melanie. you're right, it is a chilly start to the day. in the teens and 20s pretty much around the area now. but we're going to warm up a bit. yesterday some really gusty winds. 43-mile-per-hour wind gusts at reagan national airport. 46 at baltimore and 55 at dulles. i know the winds were very strong into the course of friday night and most of the first part of saturday.

today much different. calmer winds i'm happy to say and we're going to get a little bit of a different pattern. ridge of high pressure in control. nothing to show on satellite radar. skies are clear. sunshine today. few clouds increasing as we move into the afternoon hours, all ahead of our next system that's going to push its way through. overall, not bad. morning temperatures into the 20s and teens as i mentioned. we'll be warming up a bit this afternoon, with the sunshine. by this afternoon the clouds will fill in. 46degrees. and the difference from yesterday to today, even though the winds are lighter, they're coming in from the south. manager details and the -- more details and the full forecast in a few minutes. thank you, gwen. >> it's crazy. all the way up to our waist. >> crazy indeed. a day of the snow from a massive blizzard falling in the northeast. people are still digging out. the storm dumped more than 2 feet of snow in the baltimore area, breaking the record from 2003. the storm being blamed for the

death of an 11-year-old boy in massachusetts, who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in his father's car. the exhaust was still covered by snow causing the gas to leak inside the car. in connecticut, some towns have more than 30 inches of snow. five deaths being blamed on the snow, including a 73-year-old man who collapsed while shoveling. about 400,000 homes and businesses remain without power this morning. in new york, the storm created quite a mess for drivers on the long island expressway, where cars were stranded for hours. long island saw about 2 and a half feet of snow and early this morning more than 4,000 people still in the dark. new york city, mayor bloomberg praised snow crews and first responders. new york city area airports reopened yesterday and some train service between new york and boston is expected to resume today. the d.c. area lucked out with this storm, scraping by with only some of us seeing a

few inches. but the weather caused major headaches for travelers. according to flightaware.com, more than 5,000 flights were canceled this weekend. many passengers still in good spirits, saying it's not much they can do about the weather. remember, you can traffic winter weather with the fox 5 weather app. if you can't get to a tv, fox 5 is streaming our newscast live to your cell phone. go to myfoxdc.com for more information. still developing this morning, a nationwide manhunt continues for a former los angeles police officer accused of killing three people. now investigators are expanding their search to mexico, after a four-day search in the snowy california mountains proved unsuccessful. here's that story. >> reporter: bumper-to-bumper traffic and long delays for

people heading into mexico. >> usually you go right through. but not this time. >> it's pretty bad. about two hour wait on the freeway. >> reporter: that wait do in large part to the manhunt for christopher dorner. authorities requested added security. for a while saturday, only two lanes were open at the border crossing, as officers checked vehicles. authorities believe dorner may have wanted to go to mexico when he allegedly tried to steal a boat wednesday night. some people believe the added security is not necessary. >> if i was trained by the police and i was going to evade them, i would not go through known checkpoints, i would not go to high profile areas where they have surveillance up. >> reporter: others say they're not giving the manhunt much thought. >> i haven't given it much thought. i don't feel a threat by him being out there. i'm concerned for our law enforcement people and they seem to be on high alert.

>> l.a.p.d. announced its reviewing the case that led to dorner's firing. the chief says the investigation will reexamine allegations by dorner. d.c. police continue to investigate a metro station stabbing. happened early saturday morning. police say it happened on the platform of the shaw howard university fro station around 2:00 a.m. more than two dozen people involved in a fight that led to the stabbing. two people were stabbed in the hand. so far no arrests. to maryland now, a 14-year- old boy charged in the death of his infant sister. montgomery county police say the boy was left alone with the 7-month-old girl while their mother worked an overnight shift thursday. the girl was found the next morning unresponsive by her mother. police questioned the boy since he was the last one to see her alive and he confessed to

beating and suffocating her. he'll be charged as an adult. a string of robberies on and off the campus at university of maryland. no one has been injured, but police believe handguns were used in several incidents. fox5's john henrehan has that story. >> reporter: the recent spate of robberies has occurred on and off the campus. the most recent happened off campus at 11:20 friday night. according to prince george's county police, three people were walking on lakeland road when they crossed paths with two men. the two men came up behind them, each of the two men pulled out a handgun. they robbed two of the three victims. police say the suspects fled on foot, heading eastbound on lakeland running towards the train tracks. county and campus police flooded into the area, but were unable to find the suspects. thursday night a female victim was robbed on campus. happened in parking lot kk,

which is behind the chemical nuclear engineering building. a man wearing baggy jeans, dark hooded sweatshirt and a face covering pulled out a handgun and took cash, gift cards, and other personal property from the woman before fleeing, again, because of the gun being involved, both county and campus police searched the area, including with a k-9 unit, but the suspect got away. campus police are reviewing the video gathered by nearby security cameras, but have not so far released pictures to the media. another armed robbery happened in the early hours of tuesday morning off campus. police say a female student walking from the metro stop toward route one was accosted by a masked gunman who demanded and got money from the victim. the suspect was last seen walking toward the metro. there was an offcampus robbery attempt on sunday, january 27th, around 1:00 in the afternoon, university of

maryland student was accosted in the common area inside the huge vairsity apartment complex on route one. the man displayed what appeared to be a fake handgun. police say he was trying to get the student's computer, but the student fought back and another person came in and intervened, forcing the suspect to flee. county police subsequently arrested a 21-year-old man of college park, who police say has confessed to that crime. the other three cases remain open. our online story has more information describing the assailants. john henrehan, fox 5 news. good news for the 787 dreamliner airplane. it completed its first successful test night since being grounded more than three weeks ago. it was grounded after experiencing several battery related problems, including a fire on board a parked 787 at boston logan airport. the faa announced last week it would allow the test flight to

monitor the batteries inflight. boeing hopes to resume passenger flights soon. in just two days president obama will deliver his first state of the union address as a second term president. he is expected to focus on job creation and the economy. critics say the poor economy could hurt his intentions of reforming the gun control laws, immigration policy, and climate change. former vice president dick cheney is criticizing president obama's choices of cabinet nominations. he said "good folks need to hold the positions of secretary of state, cia director and secretary of defense." he also says the conditions in the middle east and north africa have worsened since mr. obama took office. happening today, the family of penn state football coach

some of the stories making headlines this morning, mardi gras celebrations in new orleans were interrupted by gunfire last night. in the city's famous french quarter, two men and two women were shot on bourbon street. one in critical condition, the other in stable. the investigation only involved one block of the street and the partying continuing around the police activity. overseas in iran, people are gathering to mark the 34th anniversary of the 1979 revolution that brought about

islam's rule. many demonstrations featured chants of down with the u.s. and death to israel. in recent years iran has used the occasion to show defiance over criticism of its nuclear program. before 1979 iran was ruled by a monarch that had good relations with western nations. fireworks celebrations across china ushered in the lunar new year. this is video from beijing where the government urged people to set off fewer fireworks this year because of recent high levels of air pollution. locally d.c.'s chinese-american community is getting ready for its parade. the parade kicks off at 2:00 this afternoon. watch out for road closures beginning this morning. we have another traffic alert to pass along, roads in pentagon city are closed this morning for a 5k race. portions are shut down now or will be shut down within the

hour. all should reopen by 10:30 this morning. the debate over the redskins' name and logo stirred again. a symposium last week featured a discussion of whether the name should be changed. it is considered by many to be a racial slur about native americans. over the years, the teams' owners have opposed the change, citing tradition. and the redskins organization is offering no comment about the forum. we want to hear your thoughts. we posted the question on our facebook page, washington redskins, offensive name or part of tradition? tell us your thoughts. we're going to share a few responses we've received. change it, like it or not, it's racist and down right wrong. i know tradition is tradition, but sometimes the world needs to move on. native americans have always found it offensive and that is not new and the fact we ignore

to the nonprofit family matters of greater washington. it's one of the nation's oldest social services organizations. the gift from herman was almost three times the annual budget of the organization dedicated to disadvantaged children, families and seniors. >> for something like this to happen is absolutely extraordinary. >> he had mentioned that he hoped there would be some fun that he might be able to help establish so d.c. kids who otherwise couldn't afford nice clothes to wear to proms or graduations, that that might be taken care of. >> reporter: he had great love for the performing arts, from his watergate condo, he'd often visit the kennedy center to visit the symphony and opera. his last gifts were given to the city he loved. >> i think it's a wonderful story that he could live so

quietly, in his death be making such a great impact. >> reporter: matt ackland, fox 5 news. after weeks of anxiety, two american women have custody of their adopted russian children. jenna and rebecca arrived in russia mid-january, expecting to leave with their children. but during their visit, a ban on americans adopting russian children became law, and the two mothers found themselves in a legal battle. they obtained a supreme court order directing a lower court to issue a decree for the adoptions. they hope their missions will help future parents looking to adopt. >> it makes us hopeful that they will do the right thing for those families, too, and allow them to come and bring home their children. because they've been vetted to the smallest degree, and to the largest degree, they've been approved already by russia to adopt the children. >> both mothers plan to leave

with their children on tuesday. the northeast blizzard has shut down many cities, some things just can't wait. during the height of the storm a massachusetts woman went into labor early yesterday morning. she called 911 and the dispatcher send national guard troops and local ems crews to deliver the baby. they brought the baby into the world with no problems. both mom and baby were transported to a local hospital and are said to be doing well. welcome. marriage equality, gun control, immigration reform and education a few of the items on president obama's to do list at his state of the union speech. we got a peek of his agenda during his inaugural address, but which goals have a shot of becoming a reality? we'll talk to chris wallace ahead. >> a big week on tap, especially with valentine's day coming up. might want to get out there and do shopping, hint hint. stay with us.

bad reflection on them, unless they're just coming in to replace the other president. on the one hand he's got to deal with spending cuts. $85billionof automatic cuts that kick in at the end of the month. it's really only a couple of weeks away. he and the democrats want to see a mix of spending cuts, but also more tax increases. republicans saying no, we gave you the tax increase on the fiscal cliff. we want this to be all spending cuts. but as you heard the president there, the weekend radio address, he also wants to see some spending increases, increased spending, stimulus, investment i guess is what he's going to call it, on things like education and energy and infrastructure and manufacturing. that's going to be a very hard sell on capitol hill, where the republicans are looking at these huge deficits. and they say, look, if stimulus spending worked with the trillion dollar deficits we've had, the economy should be in great shape. >> you have to stay away from

the s word these days. perhaps there will be some consensus on the plan that closely mirrors the president's idea. >> yes. that includes gun control -- [ no audio ] -- piece of legislation immigration. because the republicans looking at the polls and the fact that president obama got 71% of the hispanic vote in november, they know they got to get on the right side of this issue politically. so they are pulling now for a probationary legal status for the 11 million illegals who are here. but they are insisting enforcement first. you have to secure the border before you give the illegals a path to citizenship. the president says, no, put them on the path.

headlines in the week ahead. furry friends are taking over the big apple and new orleans prepares for its craziest day of the year. marianne rafferty has a look at your week ahead. >> reporter: monday, the vice president brings gun control talks to philadelphia, meeting with law enforcement officials and lawmakers for a round table discussion on gun safety. also, the westminster dog show begins in new york city, with over 3,000 dogs in the competition. the show will feature 187 different types of breeds, hoping to win the best in breed award. contestants will be whittled down to seven dogs to win the best in show. tuesday is mardi gras, and in louisiana as many as 1 million people will travel to new orleans. they'll be decked out in purple, gold and green as they hope to acquire as many beads as possible in the parades. wednesday the senate finance committee set to hold a hearing to consider the nomination of

what is one character that would claim for the dark and one claimed for the light that you have played? >> definitely i've played a character in a law and order criminal intent episode where i killed a family with a baseball bat. definitely claimed for the dark. >> maybe. >> i've played a lot of characters playing for the light. i would say my character in "doubt." on the cusp there. but ultimately the great hand of god would pick her up and pat her on the back and say, you are good. >> i have to ask about things you have on your body in the

movie. incredible. did you shoot that one day? >> it took a couple of hours. it's molding. but it looks like skin they put on my back. >> she learns more about herself over the film. over your career is there a character you played and which taught you the most about who you are? >> i have to say abilene taught me the most about who i was. and not only the narrative itself, but the whole journey of "the help" taught me the most. because the whole, the whole movie was about fining the extraordinary in you. and through the whole journey sometimes it's like the character just gets inside of you without you knowing it. and my whole journey, even through awards season, was me slowly peeling away all the masks and having the courage to live more my authentic self. >> when you go to a theater and

watch your movies now at this point in your career, can you still sit back and enjoy it? >> when you're acting, because i come from the stage, in the stage you don't watch yourself. you just act. you're not looking at yourself. you know, in the audience going, look at the way i walk. when you're in the movie, now you're watching yourself. when you're on the outside looking at it, then something invades you that is totally antithetical towards hacking and that thing is vanity. >> wow. >> vanity is absolutely plays no part in acting. all of a sudden your looking at your hair, you're looking at your skin, your weight gain, all the things you were experiencing at the time that you were shooting the film, and you're not doing that with you're in your body. like you don't know the sound of your voice, you don't know how your eyes are blinking. you don't know any of that because you're in your body. you're no longer in your body when you're watching it. you're like, my god, aging and i don't know how people feel

kick this celebration off. let's look at our weather headlines. calmer winds today. yesterday and friday night the winds were just incredibly strong. things have already calmed down quite a bit. lots of sunshine as i mentioned in my forecast. the week is starting a little bit unsettled. huge disturbance to keep an eye on. early week temperature rise for you as well. wind gusts yesterday, 43-mile- per-hour at reagan. 46 at bwi and up to 55 at dulles. i know many of you in your neighborhoods really felt the impact of those winds. calm winds today and that's a good thing. highs yesterday were below seasonal. 43 at d.c. 42 dulles. and 40 at bwi. warmer than that today. and the temperatures will rise even more as we move through into the beginning of the week for you. starting out this morning, 29 # at d.c. 23 baltimore. only 22 at dulles. 19 at frederick. 27 to the south at fredericksburg.

same for culpeper. it is a chilly start. heading out to morning services or anywhere, heading down to chinatown, dress warm. it will be chilly out there. keeping our eye on a couple of things. right now ridge of high pressure in control. that's going to slide off the coast into the course of this afternoon. we're going to see clouds increasing as it does. we've got plenty of sunshine to start the day. and this is our next weather maker. this system is going to push its way towards us. we're looking at overnight rain kicking in as well as a chance of freezing rain. freezing rain, little bit of that wintry mix, looks like mainly across areas of northern maryland as well as eastern west virginia. we'll watch that closely. tomorrow expect to see your morning start out with plenty of precipitation. here's a look at futurecast. overnight tonight starts to creep in. as we get into the early morning hours of your monday, we have plenty of rainfall here. morning commute impacted definitely. little bit more hanging out to the west. by the time we get into midday, out of the picture. we've only got the first part of the day to deal with.

very special rescue for one florida owl. this is amazing. he was trapped under the hood of a car for several days. the driver says she was driving on a highway and hit the animal. but she didn't think he was stuck in the hood. two days later the woman noticed him very much alive. she called animal control who worked to get him out. the owl amazingly was not hurt. what a great story. >> i know. us
